Approach

Small practice. Big experience. Personal service.

SGA Studio is a small, independent architectural practice founded in 2022 by Stephen Govan, following more than 28 years of experience in architecture.

A man with glasses and a beard, wearing a black sweater and white shirt, sitting at a desk, writing or drawing on large sheets of paper.
A dog with a brindle coat lying on green grass in a natural outdoor setting.

Stephen graduated from the Mackintosh School of Architecture in 1994 and has worked across a wide range of architectural practices and projects throughout his career. His experience includes several years working abroad within a World Heritage Site, before returning to the UK where he established and ran a successful commercial architectural practice for 18 years.

Alongside architectural practice, he has lectured on a variety of architectural subjects and has served on the Planning Sub-Committee of the Law Society of Scotland, bringing a broader understanding of design, planning and the built environment to his work.

Today, SGA Studio combines that depth of experience with the advantages of being an intentionally small practice: fewer layers, direct communication and a genuinely personal service.

And, during the design process, Stephen is occasionally assisted by Aura, the studio's in-house design dog, who provides creative supervision and quality control.
